Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as police and firefighters went into the residence close to Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away subsequent to the explosion was found shortly later. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He believed the detonation had happened on a floor above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
