Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
