Report Shows Synthetic Chemicals in Our Food System Generating a Health Toll of $2.2tn Each Year

Researchers have sounded an urgent alarm, stating that several man-made chemicals that underpin modern agriculture are driving increased rates of malignancies, brain development disorders, and infertility, while simultaneously undermining the basis of global agriculture.

The yearly health cost linked to contact with substances like phthalates, bisphenols, agrochemicals, and "forever chemicals" is reckoned to be as much as $2.2 trillion—a immense sum on par with the aggregate income of the planet's 100 largest publicly traded corporations, according to a recent study.

Additionally, most environmental harm is still unpriced. However even a narrow accounting of ecological impacts—considering farm losses and the expense of complying with drinking water standards for these chemicals—indicates an additional economic impact of $640 billion. The study also highlights of significant demographic implications, finding that if current exposure levels to endocrine disruptors persist, there could be between 200 million and 700 million fewer births globally between 2025 and 2100.

A Stark "Alert" from Medical Specialists

One lead researcher on the report, a prominent pediatrician and professor of global public health, called the conclusions a "blunt wake-up call".

"Humanity really has to take notice and address chemical pollution," he said. "It is my contention that the problem of synthetic pollution is every bit as critical as the problem of climate change."

He noted a concerning shift in pediatric ailments during his long career. While diseases from infectious agents have dropped significantly, there has been an "astonishing increase" in chronic diseases, with growing exposure to thousands of synthetic chemicals being a "very important cause."

The Pervasive Chemicals in Our Food

The analysis particularly focuses on the impact of four groups of synthetic chemicals commonplace in global food production:

  • Phthalates and BPA: Commonly used as plastic additives, they are present in containers and disposable gloves used in handling.
  • Agrochemicals: These enable industrial agriculture, with huge single-crop farms spraying large volumes on crops to kill pests, and numerous produce being sprayed post-harvest to maintain shelf life.
  • "Forever chemicals": Employed in greaseproof paper, food containers, and packaging, these persistent chemicals have accumulated in the environment to the point of entering the food supply through contamination.

Each of these chemical groups have been linked to grave harms, including hormonal interference, various cancers, birth defects, cognitive impairment, and weight gain.

A Largely Unchecked Problem with Unknown Risks

Public and ecological contact to manufactured chemicals has skyrocketed since the mid-20th century, with global chemical production increasing more than two hundred times. Currently, there are over 350,000 synthetic chemicals on the international market.

Alarmingly, unlike pharmaceuticals, there are few regulations to verify the safety of industrial chemicals prior to they are released onto widespread use, and little tracking of their impacts afterward. Some have subsequently been found to be disastrously toxic to humans, wildlife, and the environment.

One expert voiced particular concern about chemicals that harm the developing brains and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The researcher emphasized that the chemicals studied in the report are "only the beginning," representing a small number of substances for which solid toxicological data exists.

"What scares me the most is the many thousands of chemicals to which we're all exposed every day about which we know virtually nothing," he said. "And one of them causes something overtly dramatic, like children to be born with missing limbs, we're going to go on mindlessly exposing ourselves."

The report ultimately presents a sobering picture of a hidden problem within the world's food supply, calling for immediate measures and reform to address this colossal health and environmental burden.
