The Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' at the Blues

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton represented "the toughest 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian delivered a puzzling comment in his after-game media briefing even after earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points sent Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the mood after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's winless run to four matches.

Yet, when asked about Gusto's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his displeasure over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.

"The way the players are eager to develop has been excellent and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with numerous challenges, they are excelling after a tricky week," he commented.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people failed to back us."

When pushed further on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City manager continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when asked if it was directed towards fans or the media: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Injury & Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension issues, remarking they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our top player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the commitment from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's win over Everton cemented their position in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled next week.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear what exactly caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that timeframe, the Italian had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a session at Cobham, faced a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and secured a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any specific media reports had irked him, if social media discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
