Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup will likely need the involvement of the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to fit into the game plans and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Individual quality is important but England understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder had much to ponder after his omission of last month’s squad. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel mention appreciating the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, netting important strikes for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover around the youngster after showing that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Bellingham possesses the edge. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to support him and establish an environment which he can use his drive towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
Bellingham took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 who needs coaching. He has not played for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best this year but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester City’s win versus the German side this week.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at available. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking multiple creators to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play left wing? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
He conceded there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to score in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“This is where eventually it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be observing him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
